The situation
Dreamcatcher's unit UAU, consisting of Ji-yoo, Soo-ah, and Yuhyeon, is releasing their second mini-album 'Playlist #Your Youth' on July 1. The title track 'GENE (Jin)' promises a sophisticated house-based groove with a dreamy mood. UAU is aiming to become the summer queen with this release.

What the internet did with it

  • Netizens on Theqoo seem unbothered, with one comment stating — "they're really going for that summer vibe, hope it pays off"
  • The album includes six tracks, each expressing different emotions, which might appeal to fans looking for a diverse playlist
  • A fan noted that UAU's "addictive rhythm and repetitive hooks" could be just what they need to secure a spot in summer playlists, giving them a chance to live up to their "strongest combination" claim

The open question
The question remains whether UAU's synergy and energetic charm will be enough to secure a top spot in listeners' summer playlists, and how their unique sound will be received by the general public. The success of 'GENE (Jin)' and 'Playlist #Your Youth' will depend on how well they can blend their confident attitude with the dreamy mood they're aiming for.

What I really like after listening to the entire album is how cohesive it is. With Kpop albums you really dont know what youre getting sometimes it seems like a compilation of random songs, but this one both sonically and thematically has something similar going on, and Im liking it. Its building on the sound of the first mini, but a much more complete product. Lots of new sounds from them.

Copying my post from the Dreamcatcher sub: On first listen I like it and think it's an overall step up from the first mini album. It's a bit more cohesive and feels like they're honing in on what the UAU sound is. Personally I really like CIWFYF, Echo, and Comma, though Comma being so short makes the ending a bit abrupt. The first mini album never really had any particular strong feeling to it for when I would want to come back to it, but I can definitely see myself putting this album on to chill out with.

Digging the album after first listen, it's a lot more cohesive overall. Gene feels like an evolution of 2 Months and is much more fleshed out. Feels like they've got their core sonic identity pretty much figured out now, how receptive people will be to it is another story but I'm personally a fan of it. Curious to see what songs grow on me with more listens but after first listen my current ranking is: Gene Echo Coma 9999 Tuesday Stand By Me CIWFYF
