The situation
IU has filed a petition in a U.S. court to identify a malicious commenter, @7h***, who posted 52 false statements on Threads between March and October last year. The petitioner claims these posts damaged IU's image and reputation. This move is part of an ongoing civil defamation lawsuit in Korea that has been stalled due to the inability to identify the user.

What the internet did with it

  • Theqoo users are largely supportive, with one commenter stating — "I hope they catch the person and make them pay for what they've done, it's about time these malicious commenters face consequences."
  • Dispatch reports that IU's team categorized the malicious posts into six types, including allegations of plagiarism and false claims about her overseas accomplishments, which suggests a systematic approach to discrediting her.
  • The fact that IU's side had to take the case to a U.S. court to obtain user information from Meta highlights the challenges of pursuing online defamation cases across international borders.

The open question
The key issue now is whether the U.S. court will order Meta to disclose the identity of the user behind the @7h*** account, which would be a crucial step in IU's defamation lawsuit in Korea. The outcome of this petition will determine the direction of the case.

More than likely. It's odd that this stuff is so easy in south Korea

So the person who made this comment was from the U.S.?

No, the comments were just made on a US-based platform. Wonyoung had to do the same thing to get Sojang's identity, before she (and a few others) could properly sue her.

Anyone who disrespects IU disrespects all of us. You just don't do that.
