The situation
IU and Lee Jong Suk have broken up after four years of dating, with their agencies confirming the split due to busy schedules. The couple, who first met in 2012, had been one of Korea's most high-profile celebrity relationships. Their decision to part ways comes as both are set to pursue new projects, with Lee starring in upcoming series and IU preparing a new album.

What the internet did with it

  • — "I'm not surprised, they've been *λ‹΅λ‹΅ν•΄* (feeling stifled or frustrated) with their schedules for a while now, it was only a matter of time"
  • Dispatch reported the breakup earlier in the day, citing sources that the couple had recently parted ways, which was quickly confirmed by both agencies, showing a sense of *눈치* (social awareness or intuition) among fans and media alike.
  • The news has been met with a mix of sadness and understanding from fans, with many acknowledging the challenges of maintaining a relationship in the public eye, especially when both parties have demanding careers.

The open question
The exact timeline of the breakup and whether the couple's decision to remain "good colleagues" will translate to future collaborations or public appearances together remains unclear. A statement from either IU or Lee Jong Suk themselves is still pending, leaving fans wondering what they will say about the end of their relationship.

damn what a shocker 😭 remember when they revealed they were dating after being good friends for so long hope the best for both tho

Yeah I remember all the stuff how it seemed like a very kdrama type love story but not meant to last I suppose but with how lowkey they were it doesn't really change much how they'll operate in public events or something if they would be at the same events esp with the whole PR added in of they are maintaining the senior-junior relationship. Also adding onto the with how lowkey they were it doesn't even feel like it's been 4 years since they were confirmed to be dating lmao, not saying they should've been more public or we deserved to see more it's just that if I legit didn't even know about their relationship I would assume both were single or in private relationships that hasn't been reported.

ngl I had some sneaky hopes they were going to be the next Kim Muyeol-Yoon Seungah/ Ji Sung-Lee Boyoung/Shin Minah-Kim Woobin (his longtime bestie!) but alas, it wasn't to be. he's been openly down bad for her in his daesang speech and all over interviews (in a very respectful and appropriate way), too bad it didn't work out but that's life sometimes. Realistically, the breakup probably actually happened months ago but they kept it under wraps so as to not overshadow promotions for her drama (and to not add to the hate pileon she was getting for bs reasons after it ended) and he has a drama coming up in the second half of the year too, now that she's returned to posting normally I guess releasing breakup news was a go.

That's unexpected. The two recently broke up. They have decided to maintain a good senior-junior relationship. That's good to hear.

I mean that’s just good PR. They’re both still active in the entertainment industry, it can poison both of their acting careers if there’s a public grudge. It would be hilarious if a breakup announcement was like that though, just straight up vitriol in a press release.

“ABC would like to announce their breakup with XYZ, as XYZ is a philandering drunk. ABC would like to make it known that any public interactions will be uncomfortable at best but most likely expletive filled. Thank you.”
